Fashion Design

Performance (M.Musc)

All students in the Master of Music in Performance degree program must choose to major in an orchestral instrument, classical piano or classical voice. Each has a unique curricular table (see below).

Music Education

Candidates for the Master of Music in Music Education degree must complete a total of 35 or 38 credits, depending on the final project option chosen.  They will minor in an orchestral instrument, organ, piano or voice.

Music Minor for Academic Majors

A minor is a degree program requiring fewer hours than a major. A student enrolled as a major in another department in the College of Arts and Sciences may apply to enter the Department of Music as a Music Minor. After a successful audition and approval by the Department of Music Chair, the student will consult with an Area Coordinator to devise a scheme of courses totaling a minimum of 18 credit hours.

Academic Minor for Music Majors

A minor is a degree program requiring fewer hours than a major. A music major may elect to pursue an academic minor in another undergraduate school or college at Howard University. Such minors will usually require 18 hours of credit which may be taken concurrently with the prescribed music curriculum. Students electing an academic minor may expect to add 6 to 12 hours to the total hours normally required for graduation.

Jazz Studies (M.Musc)

The Master of Music in Jazz Studies degree is offered with an instrument (including jazz piano) or jazz voice minor. Candidates must complete a minimum of 32 credits,
     • 16 of which must be in the major concentration Jazz Studies, including improvisation, arranging and ensemble;
     • 9 credits of supportive music courses;

Sculpture

The Sculpture program provides students with a variety of sculpting experiences. The program offers courses in figure and character modeling, welded and forged steel fabrication, multi-media assemblage, wood and stone carving, woodworking, cement, and mold making and casting.

Photography

The Photography program provides students with skills, techniques, and principals of conventional darkroom practices, which form the framework for digital imaging in advance courses. Color photography, taught in combination with Photoshop, adds another dimension to creative control and expression along with multi-media applications. Advance courses in Studio Lighting, Alternative Processes, and Independent Study, are designed to allow the student to produce portfolios from collective experiences and photographic knowledge.
