African Studies (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in African Studies at Howard's Graduate School promotes rigorous interdisciplinary scholarship on critical issues pertaining to African-descended people on the African continent, in the United States, and across the Diaspora. The Ph.D. program in African Studies prepares students for academic careers in a wide range of fields, including but not limited to public policy and advocacy, public administration, cultural studies, communications, international development, international business, education, history, religious studies, transatlantic studies, and sociology.

African Studies (M.A.)

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in African Studies at Howard's Graduate School promotes interdisciplinary scholarship on critical issues pertaining to African-descended people on the African continent, in the United States, and across the Diaspora. The M.A. program in African Studies prepares students for private, public, or non-profit careers that demand specialized knowledge of the African diaspora.

Undergraduate Program in Biology

Biology majors are provided the opportunity to concentrate in one of three sub-specialties: molecular and cellular biology, anatomy and physiology, or evolutionary and ecological biology. To prepare for an emphasis in one of these concentrations, all students are required to complete a core of basic biology courses. These two core courses are General Biology (101 and 102, two semesters) and Genetics (200). General Biology (101 and 102) is a prerequisite for Genetics.

Our program cultivates and promotes interdisciplinary approaches to studying African historical, political, economic, social and cultural issues and provides necessary skills for critically understanding, analyzing and addressing problems and potential solutions.

Psychology (Clinical Psychology Specialization)

The PhD program in Clinical Psychology Specialization is the first and longest standing program at a Historically Black College or University. Accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1987, we are dedicated to bringing well-being and health to diverse groups in globally unserved settings by rigorously grounding psychological science in transcultural contexts. Our mission is to train scientist-practitioners from diverse backgrounds to apply their services to understanding and reducing societal problems.

Dr. R. Davis Dixon is an assistant professor of developmental psychology at Howard University. Our department offers didactic and research training in Neuropsychology Specialization at the doctoral level. This program provides students with a scientific understanding of human behavior as it relates to normal and abnormal functioning of the central nervous system. It also introduces students to a wide range of procedures and techniques used to study the neural bases of cognitive, affective and behavioral processes.
