The Program of Dental Hygiene was established in the College of Dentistry in 1934, and graduated its first class in 1935. In 1947, educational requirements extended the curriculum to a two-year course of study. The program awards a Certificate in Dental Hygiene and is approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation

Application Procedure 

In general, for Admission consideration, you must:

    3. Admissions application fee paid online: US$45.00

    Complete application file includes: (all listed below need to be mailed together)

    1. Demographic Information Form

    2. One (1) official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended

    3. One (1) letter of recommendation from a college professor

    4. One (1) letter of recommendation from an employer

    5. Autobiographical Essay

    6. Statement of Interest (answer the following questions)

      3. Why should the Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee select you?
         

Application Deadline 

The application deadline each academic year is February 15 classes begin in August. The Howard University Dental Hygiene Program only enrolls at the beginning of each academic year (Fall semester).
Keep a copy of your complete application file for your records. Just in case of an unforeseen incident (application lost in the mail, etc) it is highly recommended to keep a copy of all documents sent for your records.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisite Degree


The Dental Hygiene program awards a post certificate. All applicants must have an AS, AA, BS or BA degree (or within one semester of award of the degree).

Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) examination scores

While grade point average (GPA) is an objective indicator of tools needed for success in the Dental Hygiene curriculum, the TEAS test is an objective predictor of strengths in English, reading comprehension, Mathematics and Science.  It will assess readiness for the rigors of the curriculum in addition to preparedness.  

The applicant must score 50% or higher in each section:

  • Math
  • Science
  • English

*The applicant may re-test up to 3 times a year with a 30-day waiting period

Prerequisite Courses

Admission policy requires the following prerequisite science and general education courses. 
 

Science

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology I (with lab) 4 Credits
  • General Chemistry I   (with lab) 4 Credits 
  • Introduction to Microbiology (with lab) 4 Credits 
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology II (with lab) 4 Credits 

*You must have a letter grade; P/F may be accepted on a case by case basis
* Science prerequisite courses must include a laboratory and be completed at a GPA of 2.75 or greater and completed within five years prior to admissions

General Education

  • English I College Composition 3 Credits 
  • English II College Composition 3 Credits 
  • English II College Composition 3 Credits 
  • Introduction to Psychology  3 Credits 
  • Introduction to Sociology 3 Credits 
  • Introduction to Speech Communications 3 Credits

*You must have a letter grade; P/F may be accepted on a case by case basis
*General education prerequisite courses must be completed within ten years prior to admission. 

Overall prerequisite courses must be completed at a GPA of 2.50 or greater.

Note:

Prerequisite courses may be completed at other accredited post-secondary institutions.  Transfer credits will be awarded for courses completed with a grade of “C” or better.  Transfer students must submit official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended and be in good academic standing.  Evaluation of an applicant’s qualifications is based on prerequisite course work, grade point average, scores from the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam, statement of interest, autobiographical sketch/essay, letters of recommendation and in-person interview.

Caution to Prospective Students

The Board of Trustees of Howard University on September 24, 1983, adopted the following policy statement regarding applications for admission: "Applicants seeking admission to Howard University are required to submit accurate and complete credentials and accurate and complete information requested by the University. Applicants who fail to do so shall be denied admission. Enrolled students who as applicants failed to submit accurate and complete credentials or accurate and complete information on their application for admission shall be subject to dismissal when the same is made known, regardless of classification."
